DO YOU NEED AN ATTORNEY?
Some people think "I do not need to hire an attorney, I will just go with an appointed attorney or public defender to represent me." After all, a public defender is "free" he or she doesn't cost you a dime. Of course if you are in prison that money you saved might not be of any use to you.
The public defender or appointed attorney is paid for by the State out of tax dollars. Similarly, the prosecutor who is working to convict you is paid by the the State out of tax dollars. Who do you think the State pays more? The prosecutor of course!
The prosecutor has all the resources of the State. The prosecutor hires bright, hardworking attorneys to help prosecute you. Working as a prosecutor is a good career builder, some former prosecutors go on to be judges or to take high paying law firm positions. As a result bright, talented lawyers compete for those jobs. You should have the best legal defense you can provide within your means.
Sometimes a person has no choice but to go with the public defender. He or she has no money, no job, and is guilty. He or she may have a long criminal record. Maybe he or she has been to jail before and does not really mind going back. A public defender can help that person understand the charge against them and to enter a plea of guilty.
However, most people do not want to plead "guilty as charged." The reason being is that prosecutors tend to "over charge" defendants, meaning that the crime you are charged with is probably much more severe than the criminal conduct of which you may or may not be guilty. I believe in an aggressive approach to protect your liberty and rights when defending the criminal charge against you. My goal is to assess the charge against you, to assess the evidence, to assess your defense and the exculpatory evidence available to you, and to work your case either for trial or for a best interests plea. I also work to make sure my clients have every opportunity to participate in second chance and rehabilitative programs for drug and alcohol offenders. Successful completion of such programs can result in your criminal charge being dropped.
Whether your goal is to try your case, to negotiate the best possible plea, or to take advantage of second chance programs for drug and alcohol offenders, I can help you navigate the process and work toward the best possible end to protect your liberty.
